Sitting beside Colorado’s largest natural body of water and the headwaters of the Colorado River, Grand Lake is the western gateway to magnificent Rocky Mountain National Park.

Established in 1881 as an outfitting and supply point for the mining settlements of Lulu City, Teller City, and Gaskill, Grand Lake sits at an elevation of 8,369 feet above sea level.

Grand Lake Today

Surrounded by Rocky Mountain National Park on three sides, Grand Lake is a paradise for anyone looking to live a year-round active lifestyle high in the Colorado Rockies. With the worlds highest registered yacht club, highest altitude golf course with grass greens, and numerous trails with direct access to Rocky Mountain National Park from town, locals and visitors can enjoy dozens of summertime activities. Numerous events take place during the warmer months including the ever-popular Fourth of July fireworks over Grand Lake, and the Spirit of the Lake Regatta. As winter sets in, hardy locals of Grand Lake host festivals including the Three Lakes Ice Fishing Contest and the festive Winter Carnival. Night life in Grand Lake includes live music echoing from old time saloons and bars, and Broadway shows rotating through the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater all year long.

Summer and Fall

Grand Lake’s downtown is a popular tourist destination with visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park strolling the wooden boardwalks of Main Street to take in the incredible views of the surrounding mountains, perusing unique shops, and grabbing a bite to eat at one of Grand Lake’s many restaurants before or after heading into Rocky Mountain National Park.

Utilizing Grand Lake, fishing and boating are highly popular summertime activities, as are hiking and mountain biking.

When the leaves start to change to vibrant yellow, burnt orange, and pinkish-red with the coming of fall, the surrounding mountains glow with brilliant splashes of color while the sounds of bugling elk fill the air. This is the best time of year to slide open the huge windows of the dining room at the historic Grand Lake Lodge (named “Colorado’s Favorite Front Porch”) and enjoy the glorious views overlooking downtown Grand Lake and colorful aspen trees that surround the lake itself.

Winter

Named the “Snowmobiling Capitol of Colorado," Grand Lake is considered the starting point for some of the state’s longest and most accessible snowmobiling trails. Snowmobiles become the favorite mode of transportation during winter, with trails leaving directly from town to the National forest.

Avid outdoor lifestyle living here includes some of the best fishing, hunting, and hiking in Colorado, while living at the edge of one of the nation’s favorite national parks high in the Rockies. Grand Lake provides you a mix of western-style living and the easy amenities of the highly sought-after tourist destination that made Colorado famous.
