Saturday, January 14, marked the end of another successful Ullr Fest in Breckenridge, Colorado highlighted by the town reclaiming its title for the longest shotski in the world as well as the Ullr Parade that was fit for a king. This year’s event is the town’s 54th Ullr Fest celebration continuing a long held tradition in historic downtown Breckenridge of welcoming and wishing for snow by celebrating Ullr, the Norse god of snow.
Horned hats modeled after viking helmets and animal furs are the attire of choice and can be seen throughout the entire four day event. The event draws a massive crowd of more than 12,000 snow lovers of all ages with activities ranging from the Ullr Parade to the Polar Plunge, where brave individuals take a chilly dip in the ice covered Maggie Pond.
It seemed Ullr fulfilled everyone’s wishes ahead of time with Breckenridge Ski Resort reporting more than 40 inches since the beginning of the week. While skiers rejoiced, the more than three feet of snow wreaked havoc on travel conditions in the high country closing the majority of the area’s highways and mountain passes and collapsing a roof of a conference room in Breckenridge (no one was harmed during the roof collapse). Rumors are circulating that another storm is on the way for the mountains of Colorado, check that forecast here.
This year Breckenridge’s title for longest shotski in the world was under attack by Park City, Utah. Park City barley nudged past Breckenridge’s record last year, however the title has been officially reclaimed by the historic Colorado ski town with 1,234 individuals lining Breck’s Main Street to claim their spot on the 1,997 foot shotski. Only time will tell if the record will stand or if another push will have to be made next to reclaim the title.
Breckenridge Distillery, the world’s highest distillery, helps to organize the event and creates a special blend of booze every year specifically for the event. This year’s shotski participants where treated to the first tastes of the distillery’s newest creation, a cinnamon flavored whiskey called Hot Box Cinnamon Whiskey, which turned out to be a huge hit and should hit liquor store shelves soon.
The Ullr Parade is the second favorite spectacle of Ullr Fest with local businesses and organizations creating one of a kind floats that revolve around worshiping the snow god. Check out the video in this post to get a glimpse into what this exciting event is all about.
The next big event to catch in Breckenridge is the International Snow Sculpture Championships where teams of talented snow carvers from all over the world will carve some of the most stunning snow sculptures you will ever see in hopes of claiming the first place title. The carvers will begin sculpting their masterpieces January 24th and public viewing of the sculptures begins January 28th and continues through February 5th.
